Nicolò Bambini
(Venice 1652–1736)
The Massacre of the Innocents, oil on canvas, 130 x 166.5 cm, framed
Born in Venice, Nicolò Bambini received his first training under Giulio Mazzoni. Later he moved to Rome, where he was apprenticed to Carlo Maratti. The movement and dynamism of the present painting are reminiscent of the art of Sebastiano Ricci, a contemporary of Bambini’s. The present work dates from the artist’s maturity and was done around the same period as the ceiling paintings in the church of San Moisé in Venice, executed before 1682, and the frescoes in the Archbishop’s Palace in Udine, painted between 1709 and 1718.
We are grateful to Professor Egidio Martini for confirming the attribution.
